Brief summary
Adolf I (of Altena), archbishop of Cologne, declares that Gozewijn IV, lord of Valkenburg, with the consent of lady Jutta, his wife, has donated his court at Munstergeleen with all the serfs, income and appurtenances and half of the patronage right there to the monastery of St. Mary at Heinsberg and to the place of St. Gerlach. He has done so to compensate for the crusade to Jerusalem that he promised but did not complete. Adolf I in turn releases Gozewijn IV from his promise and indemnifies him from future punishment for breaking it.

In nomine sancte et individue Trinitatis.a

Dutch translation
Adolf, archbishop of Cologne, announces that Gozewijn, lord of Valkenburg, for the forgiveness of his sins and for the acquisition of eternal happiness with several high nobles of the empire has taken the sign of the cross of the Lord in order to recover together with worshippers of the orthodox faith the land destined for salvation, as well as the wood of the cross decorated with the gift of the saving sacrifice, and the tomb glorified by the resting place of Christ, or to deploy the possibility of his powers and means in the service of this recovery. But as Gozewijn has made known to Adolf without hesitation, he has been prevented from fulfilling his vow by various impediments, obstacles and setbacks. He therefore considered how he could better turn the delay of his crusade to his spiritual benefit. But mindful of the divine mercy and the fearsome divine justice in all human conduct, he decided to apply himself more diligently to his salvation. And so that he might not in the future be undeservedly accused of improper and presumptuous conduct by a false accusation, Gozewijn redeemed the delay by this postponement with the provision of Adolf's council. And with the voluntary consent of lady Jutta, his wife, he has with generous piety permanently endowed the monastery of St. Mary in Heinsberg, dedicated to divine service by religious brothers and nuns, and the place of St. Gerlach with his court at the village of Munstergeleen, with all serfs, revenues and appurtenances of that court and with the patronage right of the church that belongs to him for half. Some men have been enfeoffed with the allodium of that court, to which Gozewijn added that their fief would fall to the said churches when one of them died without an heir. Adolf approved this donation without anyone objecting, made with fitting faith and piety, rightfully and lawfully forever to the poor of Christ. And he wants Gozewijn to be acquitted of the offence of this delay and of any sentence of excommunication that has been pronounced and will be pronounced against those who break the promise of pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He releases Gozewijn from this on condition that, if God deigns to grant Gozewijn the opportunity to depart, he will not dare to postpone the fulfilment of his vow. But if he dies before that, let him know that he is supported by the prayers of the church and the saving sacrifice and the alms given for him.
Adolf has sealed, as well as Gozewijn and Jutta, and he stipulates under pain of excommunication that no secular or ecclesiastical person shall attempt to change this legal act or dare to remove the said court with everything that rightfully belongs to it from the aforesaid monastery and the place named after it or presume to violate it in any way.
And if anyone is not ashamed to do this, he incurs the displeasure of almighty God and the holy Mary, eternal virgin, and St. Peter, prince of the apostles, and, separated from the community of the faithful, is subject to eternal damnation unless he repents.
Witnesses are: Dirk, provost of St. Gereon in Cologne, Gerard, provost of Xanten, Henry, abbot of St. Pantaleon in Cologne, Henry, Duke of Limburg, Margrave of Arlon, Henry of Wassenberg, his son, Adam Pincerna, Gozewijn, his brother, Dirk, advocate of Meerssen, Dirk Ogier, Gozewijn of Heer, Philip of Asselt and Emmo of Klimmen.
